Ladies Hiking Rule #1

Ready to turn around? Do it!

If you've ever been on one of those "Forced Marches" - you know what I'm talking about. The leader yells for everyone to "push on!" The goal is all, and NOone turns around before the summit.

Bah! Ladies Hiking says, You have permission to head back, at any time, for any reason. No questions, no pressure, no win, no loss.

It's your hike. Your joy, your walk in the woods (along the river, around the lake, Cappuccino at a Sidewalk Cafethrough the park - where are you hiking, anyway?), and you get to decide when the enjoyment begins to pale.

When you hear yourself saying to yourself, "Dang, I'd rather be sipping a cappuccino!" - head back.

Ladies Hiking Rule #2

Camping is not a requirement.

Staying at a lovely B&B, complete with a soft bed, a down comforter, a romantic fireplace and a gourmet breakfast and also hiking the surrounding trails COUNTS as a hiking weekend getaway.

Believe me, there's nothing like waking up in the country to the smell of bacon frying in the kitchen, with someone else doing the frying. Heaven.

I did this when I hiked the Cinque Terre trail in Italy. And, complete disclosure: I also took a lunch break along the trail at a wonderful sidewalk cafe in Vernazzo and then finished the day with a fresh fish dinner at another sidewalk restaurant, this one in Levanto.Cinque Terre, Italy

When you walk all day, whether it's along a famous Riviera trail or just another country road, it counts as a hike. And hiking burns up calories! LOVE that about hiking! Hey, that calls for another cappuccino!
